In our one-year anniversary episode, Daphne and I talk to Luth Brodie of Reel Expression -- our first interview with an animator! We also announce our Avatar of Style and read some comments from our listeners. There's also an incomprehensible voicemail from one of our favorite friends. Want to know more? Sorry, you'll have to listen to the show!

Our year-anniversary Avatar of Style is Mr. Davey Hullabaloo. When he's not busy slinking down catwalks as a model for Imagen Divine Agency or snapping pictures for NetroSanct Studios, he's the editor for the new Homme magazine.

Miko Omegamu's Icing is the destination for classic feminine styles. While she has definitely mastered the flexi prim, her system skirt outfits are what truly set her apart from the crowd.

In her picture, Daphne is wearing Icing's Stepford Wife outfit; Take THAT, Cancer! RFL key; Truth's Olivia hair; Fleur's Vivant Feline skin; and Tesla's Mary Jane heels.

Onyx LeShelle's Maitreya is one of my favorite stores in the metaverse! While her clothes, hair and poses are adorable, what really made her famous are her shoes. Her textures are just about the most realistic and sumptuous around. She makes glossy patents, buttery leathers, soft velvets, and luscious suedes. Of course, the styles and colors are up-to-the-minute as well, making shoe shopping at Maitreya positively addictive!

In my picture, I'm wearing Maitreya's Tunic dress, Aimee hair, and Verve shoes; Marlys' Poos's Perfume jewelry; and Minnu Model Skins' skin.

In a dramatic castle on the Avilion Mist sim, Serenity Sieyes and Malakh Giles display their fantastic clothes and jewelry. Focusing on fantasy wear, Avilion Mist is filled with elaborate flowing gowns and capes, intricate jewelry, and even attire for tinies.

In her picture, Daphne is wearing Avilion Mist's Mystic RFL gown, Mystic circlet, and Inspiration Collection earrings and necklace; Maitreya's Dune boots; Blowpop's Mellie3 skin; and ETD's Keri hair.

At BettiePage Voyager's shop on the Osaka sim, you can find hair, skins, and adorable clothes. Be sure to comb the shelves for fun finds like the Angry Rabbit legwarmers!

In this picture, I'm wearing BP*'s Cotton Lace dress, Lace legwarmers, Triple Ice Dango hair, and Dec. skin; and Maitreya's Verve shoes.

In the picture above, I'm wearing Kurotsubaki's Asian tunic and Hippie jeans; Boing Fromage's Owl necklace; Fashionably Dead's Jelly shoes; Detour's Sienna hair; and Fleur's Deux Parfait skin.

No, the title of the show doesn't refer to our guest, TheDiva Rockin. It refers to the show itself. An interview with TheDiva is a lot of fun and very entertaining, but I can't remember what we were supposed to talk about. Perhaps it had something to do with her being the chief of Second Life's Fashion Police.

She's certainly seen her share of fashion "don'ts" on the grid, and she shares them with us in her blog SL Fashion Police. Sometimes the fashion faux pas are funny, sometimes they're raunchy, sometimes they're just plain wrong.

In any case, watch what you wear so that you don't get ticketed by TheDiva's crew!

Our latest Avatar of Style is blogger and model Ana Lutetia. Her polished classic style is only out-shined by her sunny personality.

Here, Ana's wearing Persona's Helena shirt and waist sash; Celestial Studios' cords; AC Vintish shoes; Truth's Montague hair; Celestial Studios' Vogue skin; Awesome's Glitter manicure; and, of course, poses of her own design.

On this episode of Going Broke, we spoke with one of Second Life's most famous avatars, caLLie cLine. Not only does she design clothing and furniture for her own store, caLLie cLine, she was also named one of Maxim magazine's Hot 100, and she worked with Pontiac on Motorati Island. With a schedule like caLLie's, we were sure grateful that she could take the time to talk with us.

Not one to read fashion blogs, caLLie designs what she likes, and has built a very loyal following doing just that. Her designs are fun, flirty, feminine, and quite colorful -- not for the shy!

This episode of Going Broke, we sat down with Launa Fauna. Not only is she the designer behind LF Fashions -- the store with the best jeans in Second Life, she's also the skin artist behind Chai. And, as if that weren't enough, she's also a lingerie designer, along with Nephilane Protagonist, who puts out a yearly Valentine's line called Love Lace. Sit back and enjoy the interview!
Category:Featured Designer/Store -- posted at: 11:44 PM

Noelle Eilde of Argyle makes the most perfect sweaters for cold winter days. If you're still cold after putting on one of her adorable sweaters, add one of her scarves. Of course, even in warmer weather, you'll appreciate her cute outfits and accessories.

In the picture above, I'm wearing Argyle's Plaid Knit sweater, Kelsey scarf, and Les Animaux Vintage Souvenir Charm bracelet. I'm also wearing LF Fashions' Ingenue jeans; Refuge's Incidental heels; ETD's Lynne II hair; and Chai's Cole skin.

Don't you wish there was one store that could meet your ear, paw and tail needs? Just your luck, Philo Sion has created Hybrid! This unique store caters to all of Second Life's urban Nekos (cats), Usagis (rabbits), Kitsunes (foxes), Nezumis (mice) and Innus (dogs). Teleport over if you need a scripted tail, or a cute matchbox-shaped bed. Hybrid has everything you need to make your Neko life complete.

In the picture above, Daphne is wearing Nezumi ears and tail from Hybrid; a jacket and top from the Simmie outfit at Dutch Touch; Athena jeans from LF Fashions; Riot boots from Draconic Kiss; Raia hair from Deviant Kitties; and Becca skin from Chai.

Sometimes, you meet someone so stylish, it's just too dangerous to post a picture. Sometimes, you meet someone who just keeps forgetting to get you a picture. Fortunately, Vasean Talamasca is neither. Catero Revolution describes Vasean as a "style guy" that all the guys want to be and all the girls want to jump. Looking at that picture, I don't wonder why.

Would you blame us if we never had another show for men ever again? Really, don't you remember the effects of Episode 3? Honestly, you'd be okay with us not going through that pain again, right? We're sure you would. We have the best listeners around!

Well, for that very reason, we decided to venture once again into the murky waters of men's fashions in Second Life. This time, we actually put some thought into who we'd invite onto the show. Yes, that's right! No wind-up midget butler, no shoeless wonder, and no Johnny-3-outfits! We sought out people who really understand men's fashions and CARE about them!

Just for you, we've interviewed Kirk Claymore and Maddox DuPont of KMADD Enterprises. They're the pair behind the upscale men's fashion sim, KMADD City. There, male avies will find fashions by Redgrave, Casa del Shai, Paper Couture, Minnu Model Skins as well as many others. The sim is also home to KMADD's own shape store and image consulting business, as well as their modeling agency and photography studio.

Sit back and enjoy a men's fashion show that's really about men's fashion! Really!

I have been experiencing some difficulties uploading Going Broke Episode #16. As soon as I can get it to upload properly I will hit that publish button and you can hear the great interview we had with Kirk Claymore and Maddox Dupont of KMadd.

I wonder though, the last men's episode we did, #3, gave me lots of troubles too... Maybe it's the topic. Men are just difficult sometimes.

Hope you will be hearing from us soon,

Daphne

You had to know this was coming. It wasn't a big secret. If you've been listening faithfully, as we know you have, you'd have seen this coming a mile away. Honestly, she was our Avatar of Style, a semi-featured designer (Savvy?), a frequent topic of conversation, a prominent SL model and muse, makes sense she'd appear as a guest doesn't it?

How could we go an entire show without mentioning her name? We couldn't. And if you're talking about style and fashion in SL, neither can you. Her name is almost synonymous with both. This talented Australian university student is an "IT" girl if there ever was one. She's creative, talented, and has an eye you wouldn't believe. If we didn't have her on the show soon, you should have forced us off of your MP3 player. Thankfully, we brought her to you, and we can continue to happily blow through Lindens like nobody's business. MWAH!!!!

In case you didn't see it live or even if you did, I was interviewed by Paisley Beebe for Tonight Live on SLCN.TV last Sunday. I had a great time, even after being told we would need to re-record the interview because of technical problems. So, if you saw it live, the interview on their website is a little different.

Paisley commented on what I was wearing so I blogged about it over at Daphne's Random Thoughts.

When Daphne passed me a note from listener Demelza Beaumont recommending Pochette, I was curious. Ms. Beaumont included a picture of herself in a soft fall outfit that I would kill for in real life (okay, I wouldn't kill for it, I'd just shop for it). I loved the soft wool skirt in the picture, and it turns out it was from Pochette. So, I visited Pochette the next day. Several hundred lindens later, I had a gorgeous new fall wardrobe with feminine skirts, tailored jackets, and gorgeous scarves. Sure, I'm now broke, but it was well worth it! Thanks, Demelza!

I’m wearing Pochette’s Diagonal Pleat skirt, Knit jacket, Nep Knit socks (freebie!), and Simple muffler. So cute and cozy! When I tp’d in, I almost started hyper-ventillating from the cute! I’m also wearing Olive & Violet’s Red Paisley shoulder bag from Red Rabbit Couture; Shiny Things‘ Flare oxfords; Studio Sidhe’s Thai Silk cami; ETD’s Bonita hair; Mad About’s Diamond Dewdrop earrings; Tete a Pied’s Vin skin; and Lemon’s Oh Marie shape.

Puma Jie's Corduroy is the place to go when you want some fun legwear to add some color to your fall and winter gear! Argyles, polka dots and stripes festoon Puma's socks, leggings and thigh-highs. For as little as $30L a pair, you can make yourself stand out from the crowd. While your at Corduroy, don't forget to pick up a pair of soft flannel boxers to wear in your cubby (also for sale at Corduroy and designed by Alan Wijaya)!

A builder, Ms. Suen started making masks last November because she didn't believe that available masks were up to her high standards. Eventually, she began producing hats and jewelry. Soon, we should be seeing Illusions clothing with feathers by Jen Shikami!

One of her most recent projects, the Gracile hat, was featured in Nicky Ree's ads for her fabulous Swan Lake. Siyu just happened to run across Bonnie Trivizas' real life swan hat from her feather business, Fowl Play. Ms. Trivizas gave Siyu permission to interpret her design in Second Life, and an instant classic was born.

Be sure to check out the Gracile hat at Illusions. Also, visit the new Deviant Kitties sim which Siyu built!

Iki Ikarus' Dutch Touch is a great store for emo/grunge/punk outfits and separates for men and women. The clothes have a common color scheme, so you can mix and match parts of one outfit with parts of another. We love the clothes from this innovative designer and we think you will, too!

Sandy Clymer's Pillow Talk is a great place to buy poses, animations and now, even houses. Teleport over to the store on the Pillow Talk sim and you'll find yourself in fluffy clouds, surrounded by soft, cushy pillows. Move down through the levels of the store and you'll end up on the ground near a peaceful picnic scene where you can relax with friends.

Wow. This is our tenth episode! Can you believe it? Neither can we! We wanted to do something special, so we looked for a major designer with a bit of an air of mystery! We also really wanted to use the title "Another Helping of Tiramisu!"

Luckily, Elikapeka Tiramisu of ETD was available. You know ETD, the huge hair shop that EVERYONE loves? C'mon, look in your inventory, you have Sofia, don't you? If not, get over to ETD immediately! See the entry below for a SLurl.

Of course, having such a major guest on the show presented a problem. How do you follow that act? For us, the answer was clear -- with Madison Carnot: fashion blogger (http://blog.secondstyle.com and http://madisoncarnot.wordpress.com), model, shopping queen, and our closest friend.

Today, we had the pleasure of speaking with Elikapeka Tiramisu. As the designer behind ETD, Elika designs hair, clothing, accessories, and shoes. However, being one of the biggest hair vendors in Second Life isn't enough for Ms. Tiramisu. She shared with us that now she's working on designing skins!

If she's half as meticulous about her skins as she is about her hair, we're in for quite a treat. For now, Elika revealed to us that she's still in the early stages of developing her skins as you'll hear on the show. Though she's also working on making her ETD Isle store a more efficient place to shop.

As frequent ETD shoppers ourselves, Daphne and I have learned first-hand that Elika is very concerned about keeping her customers happy. We're confident saying that whatever Elika does next, it will be worth waiting for!

Well, it was inevitable that we were going to give our friend Madison this honor. Having been here for two years, she knew both of us when we were newbies and she taught us both how to shop in Second Life. Honestly, we hate to think of how we'd look today if she hadn't intervened!

We spoke with Madison about some of her favorite places to shop in Second Life. For soft flexi curls and waves, Madison is all about Cake. And she swears the best jeans in SL can be found at LF Fashions. We followed her there and left several Lindens lighter. However, it was me, Tamara, who converted Madison to the cult of Tete a Pied, where she now buys most of her skins.

In the above picture, Ms. Carnot is wearing a Black Satin Suit by Chic Boutique; Black Vinyl Vixens Shoes by Tesla; Amelia White Diamond necklace and earrings by Second Mirage; Kitty belly charm by Lynx; Anisa hair by ETD; and Glam skin by Tete a Pied.

Miabella Foxley of Imagen Divine Agency [ida] visited with us to tell us about the Divine Intervention event she and the other ladies of Imagen Divine (Victoria Coppola, Elysium Eilde and Annisha Mankiewicz) have planned for October 5 from 5 to 8 in the evening SLT.

Part fashion show, part gala, Divine Intervention will feature designs by seven of Second Life's top designers, Haedon Quine, Lux Yao, Shai Delacroix, Betty Barracuda, Tuli Asturias, Betty Doyle, and Kara Eagle. Their designs will be featured both on the runway, and on models dancing to the beats of DJ Coldfront Revolution throughout the 3 hour event.

The ladies at Imagen Divine Agency have also arranged deluxe gift bags with some amazing gifts. To get your mitts on the goodies, be sure to attend the hottest fashion event in Second Life, Divine Intervention!

This week on Going Broke with Daphne and Tamara, we spoke with some of the movers and shakers in the Second Life fashion world. We interviewed Haver Cole and Saeya Nyanda who told us about their work in SL fashion as well as their work on sims such as Imogen, Le Zoo and Carnival Island. The co-founders of Pwned Magazine are two very busy avies!

Next, visited with Miabella Foxley of the Imagen Divine Agency, a modeling agency that is putting on what will surely be THE event of the fashion season, Divine Intervention. You won't want to miss this three-hour blow-out on October 5 for some amazing fun and fashion!

Aparently, Akela Talamasca of SLInsider Podcast thought that he could get back at us for taking over his podcast a couple of months ago. He sent over his cohorts, Haver Cole and Saeya Nyanda, co-founders of Pwned Magazine to see if the ladies could take over our podcast. Well, Mr. Talamasca's evil plan backfired right in his furry face.

Instead of Haver and Saeya taking over Going Broke, they chose to tell us about their ventures in SL. Ms. Cole, um, er, Doctor Cole, is SL's finest plastic surgeon, designing shapes exclusively for Lemon. I have been wearing Lemon's Oh Marie shape (all of the shapes are named for Louis Prima songs!) for several weeks and I can't get over the cuteness of the soft smile. Ms. Nyanda (a member of SL's puppet community) is the designer behind Kyoot Army, a new boutique that's taking the grid by storm. In addition to Kyoot Army, Saeya also works for Linxster, working on Carnival Isle!

So, Akela, now you have even more tornados!

In Episode 8 of Going Broke with Daphne and Tamara, we catch up with Shai Delacroix of Casa del Shai. Her interview was as fun as her clothing, and we learned the story behind her Adulterer suit!

After visiting with Shai, Daphne and I headed over to Creamshop on Koenji for some much needed retail therapy. From there, we headed over to Silver Rose Designs in Shengri La where Daph picked up an "Alice in Wonderland" inspired dress and I drooled over dresses that looked like cakes. Finally, we headed over to Violet Voltaire on Vodou to accessorize our finds.

Before leaving you, we announce our fourth Avatar of Style, Mr. Menno Ophelia. Unless Mr. O sends us a snap or two, or twelve for our personal collections, you'll just have to imagine the hawtness!

For more details on the shops we visited, including pictures and SLurls, see the entries below. As always, music on our show is from the Podsafe Music Network at music.podshow.com. Please subscribe to our show on iTunes and join our group for folders of landmarks to the stores we visit (and the occasional giftie!).

It's really hard to believe that designer SAZAE Yoskikawa of Tokyo only arrived in Second Life at the end of February this year. SAZAE's prim lilies are incredibly detailed and realistic, and they grace bangles, dresses, and a darling poncho. Creamshop's main store on the Koenji sim (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Koenji/200/113/43) is a combination hunting lodge and love shack filled with fun designs for men and women as well as funky hair and hats!

We've all seen those gorgeous, ethereal porcelain skinned dollies drifting through SL. Some of them wear Edwardian clothes, some wear Victorian garb. Several of them dress like they just stepped out of a fairy tale. Many look like they're hiding from Bolsheviks during the Russian revolution. Modern dollies tend to dress like Gothic Lolitas. But what do all of them have in common? Silver Rose Designs on the Shengri La sim (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Shengri%20La/119/41/25). Yuriko Muromachi makes some of the most gorgeous dresses (and men's suits) you could ever hope to see! If you're looking for a darling dress that looks like it could be made of frosting and sugar flowers, come to Silver Rose Designs.

Back when we were getting ready to begin our podcast this past April,
we set a policy regarding what are called "review copies." A review
copy is merchandise a designer/builder gives to a reviewer so the
reviewer can critique the merchandise based on more than just a
picture.

Until now, our policy had been that we would not request review
copies. That policy, however, has to change. Daphne and I are indeed
going broke doing our research for Going Broke.

When we wrote our original policy, we thought designers and builders
just gave out review copies. That belief changed when we met
Celebrity Trollop at SLCC. We thought that if anyone would just be
given review copies, it would be her. When we asked her how she got
review copies, she said that she just asked for them.

From now on we will ask for review copies when we want to consider a designer/builder for mention on our show. This does not mean that we will automatically review you on our show. As we've said before, we only discuss work that is high quality. If someone's work doesn't meet our standards, we simply won't feature them.

As always, we will inform our audience when we have received review
copies by noting it in the show notes.

In this episode, Daphne and I don't tell you where to buy skin, shapes and hair, but how to buy them. These are things that can be confusing, and often result in unused, expensive items that taunt you from your inventory.

While we can't guarantee perfect results, if you follow the steps we've laid out, you are about a bazillion times more likely to be happy with your skin, shape and hair, and yes, look great naked (except for the guys b/c we don't discuss where to buy bits -- hey, that's another show!).

Daphne and I were also lucky enough to attend SLCC in Chicago last month and we talk about some of the amazing people that we met and now miss.

By the way, we've got another project brewing! Keep your eyes and ears open for more details in the near future.

Direct download: GBDT_-_Ep_7_and_a_half_-_Demos_are_Our_Friends.mp3
Category:podcasts -- posted at: 3:05 AM

1. Get as many demos as possible, the more the merrier. Make sure the demos come with landmarks! If they don't, create landmarks and put them in the folders with the demos. Honestly, wouldn't it be THE SUCK if you found the perfect skin and the only information you had was "Bronze/Makeup 4"?

2. Find a quiet, secluded location and set the light to Noon.

3. Decide what's really important to you about the skin and the order of importance:
-- makeup (women)/facial hair (men)
-- skin tone
-- muscle tone
-- private parts
-- special features like freckles

5. Start trying on skins focusing on your primary consideration.

6. After you narrow down the selection, deleting the demos that you want to rule out, look at the skins again focusing on the next item on your list.

7. Continue doing this until you have narrowed your demos down.

8. If you have more then one demo left start at the top of the list and really zoom in on the parts that matter to you to make the final choice. Of course, you can also buy more than one skin if you like!

9. When you're ready to buy:
-- note whether the skins are mod and/or copy.
-- don't be afraid to buy skins from different vendors.
-- women may want to start with more than one skin for day and evening looks.

10. Look for any information on changing the color of facial and body hair to match your hair. Some companies make notecards to help you do this, others may have HUDs, others may make different color bald caps and, um, undies.

Tips to help you zoom in:
Use a pose stand
Set menus to Debug mode (Ctrl-Alt(Opt)-Shift-D)
Under the Client menu check off Disable Camera Restraints
Also if you are rezzing slowly or won't rez, under Client go to Character and select Rebake Textures

Skin is probably the single most expensive part of your avatar, do not make a rush decision on what skin to buy. You skin defines you more than anything else.

1. Your shape is modifiable. Try tweaking it yourself before buying one.

2. Play with the appearance sliders.
-- try not to go to extremes if you want a realistic look.
-- think about proportions. Pinheads, gorilla arms, and t-rex arms are NOT attractive! The biggest boobs/butt/package will make your clothes look funny.

3. If you'd rather leave your shape to the professionals, look for shops with live models, thorough descriptions, or demos.
-- some stores have live models who will try on shapes for you and may even be able to show it to you in your brand of skin.
-- don't be afraid to ask questions.
-- look for shapes that are copy/mod.
-- female shapes that include a dress shape are preferable, otherwise make sure you can copy/mod your shape, or system skirts will be a problem.

In this set of pictures, Tam is wearing a Safari Sun swimsuit by Silky Whispers, Earthtones Boho earrings, Tete a Pied Pin-Up skin, ETD Anisa hair, and shapes by Tete a Pied and Lemon. ( Left to Right: Lemon Lazy River Shape, TaP Seductress - retired, Lemon Oh Marie)
Category:general -- posted at: 4:41 PM

1. Always try on a demo! Almost every store has demos that are free or just $1L. Make sure the hair fits your head or make sure that you can make it fit.

2. If the demo doesn't fit perfectly but you still like the hairstyle, make sure you can copy/mod it:
-- sometimes, fixing the hair may only involve moving it slightly, not modifying the hair.
-- don't be afraid to ask for help! Shops like ETD have employees who can help you.
-- pose stands are your friends!

3. Deciding on color -- this is the fun part! Most stores have color demos you can try on; you may not like the style, but it will help you with the color.

4. Don't be afraid to try something new. Blue hair may not work in your real life, but anything goes in SL!

5. The vast majority of hair is not transferable! If you want to buy it as a gift, look for gift certificates.

6. If the hair shop is laggy, buy your demos and try them on at home or someplace else.

7. Don't be afraid to play with bangs/fringe. Consider different colors!

While Daphne and I narrowly escaped our recording of Episode 3 (Scythe is the New Black), we took a risk and invited back one of our guests, Radar Masukami of SL Under the Radar Podcast (http://www.SLUnderTheRadar.com) and his blog Reading Radar (http://www.RadarMasukami.com). It wasn't just because Radar didn't try to hijack our show (sorry, Crap), it was because he possesses useful information we wanted our audience to have (sorry, Will). Also, the big name guest we'd planned to interview was back in rehab after being caught teleporting under the influence with her prim baby (drinking Red Bull from his bottle!) in her lap all while fighting with her shoulder-pet kinkaju (whatever that is).

Sure, the superstar was about to launch her line of specially perfumed music-playing clothing in SL. However, Daphne and I agreed that she needed time to work through her issues and reconnect with her world-famous pro-athlete partner before learning how to use Skype.

Always ready to lend a hand, Mr. Masukami filled the superstar's size zero shoes at a moment's notice. Even though he was asked to fill in minutes before we were to record, Radar was kind enough to pull together a list of his favorite Japanese and East Asian inspired stores.

For detailed furniture and jewelry, those with higher prim budgets should visit Mezzanine Qi's Mezzanine Gardens (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Seven%20Veils/131/43/23). If you want hair with an Asian flair, TP to Hayate's Hair Lab (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Harajuku/108/81/22) for Hayate Ewing's styles.

The Metabirds sim is home to a lot of Asian shopping, such as the mall at http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Metabirds/144/59/22, where Radar has shopped for skins, shapes, hair and clothing. When Radar wants a new Kimono, Yukata (a more casual Kimono-style garment) or fan, he visits KG Jewell's Samurai Soul at http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Sugamo/186/182/2.

Any fashion lover on a budget will appreciate June Dion's Bare Rose at http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Bare%20Rose/150/20/30, though Radar is especially fond of June's Samurai-esque items. Take your new purchases home and relax on the budget-friendly furniture Emerald Greenstein has designed for Japanese & Asian Decor Zen Kanji at http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Manitoba/212/153/60.

For more traditional Japanese looks including clothes, tattoos, weapons and avies, you'll want to drop in to Asian Inspiration (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Anhalt%20Hill/93/177/43) where SheOfTheSourSnailSuckers Sellery and her fellow designers sell their wares.

Another area to visit for Japanese items is Nagaya Little Kyoto (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Juho/95/162/62). Radar bought one of his many homes here, and he also shops there for clothes, hair and skins. FORM on The Block by Zabitan Assian (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Varado/135/144/31) is where Radar goes to pick up Japanese t-shirts featuring Ultraman and Mazinger.

Rivlyn Rawley designs Japanese-style buildings for Umi no Sakura (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Samurai%20Island/68/138/24), and you can furnish your new home with Digital Bamboo's furniture from (you guessed it!) Digital Bamboo (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Samurai%Island/211/198/24). While on Samurai Island, be sure not to miss JilQun Tantalus' clothing at Tenchu (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Samurai%20Island/196/97/24) and Wisper Patel's Bonsai trees at Bonsai by Wisper (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Samurai%20Island/164/239/24).

Finally, Radar recommended that anyone interested in western fashions seen through Japanese eyes go to Musashi-Do (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Anton/137/234/94).

Of course, Daphne and I have also noticed Asian-influenced styles at some of our favorite shops such as Cake (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/FNKY%20Cake/127/45/24);
Deviant Kitties (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Deviant%20Kitties/207/123/301); and Curious Kitties (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Curious%20Kitties/218/21/21). I also recommend Vlinder Reitveld's Vlintuition (http://www.slurl.com/secondlife/Chong/6/76/43) for Vietnamese and Thai clothing in gorgeous silks.
Daphne recommends Horton's Asian Prefab homes (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Wingo/212/79/25) for some Asian inspired homes and gazebos, she owns several.

Until next time when Daphne and I hope to have the ankle-braceleted celebutard (did I just say that?) on our show, we're signing off!

We began Episode Six of Going Broke with Daphne and Tamara with our interview of Lucas ("Luck") Lameth. Lucas brings what he sees on the streets of New York City to life in his creations.

In his store, Earthtones (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bushido%20Bay/76/236/24), you'll find everything from casual, down-to-earth wooden bangles to exquisite formal jewelry that will draw all eyes to you! No matter what you choose, we're sure that you will treasure your Earthtones jewels the rest of your Second Life!

Don't forget to check out Lucas' designs for the male avie! However, don't be jealous if your guy's getting more admiring glances, it's the Earthtones jewelry, for sure!

After visiting Earthtones, we swung by Caroline's on the Lo Lo sim (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Lo%20Lo/128/196/23); Simply Spoiled in Mechozilla (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Mechozilla/102/143/44); Mad About in Satang (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Satang/117/233/27); and Ricx's in Nepessing (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Nepessing/64/97/125). Check out our reviews below and see pictures of our new Avatar of Style, Dakota Buck!

Of course, there are so many more jewelry stores in Second Life, one show wasn't enough to cover all of our favorites! Don't despair if we didn't hit your favorite store, we're going to do another jewelry show in the future!

I have been trying since yesterday to get Episode 6 out for your listening pleasure. While it appears on the website for some reason, yet unknown, the feed from Libsyn to the podcatcher of your choice isn't working. If you need your Going Broke fix or want to find a jewelry store to buy something for yourself, a loved one or your favorite over-stressed podcast host, you can use the player on the website.

If you need something for your MP3 player here are a few recommendations:

SL Under The Radar: http://www.slundertheradar.com
Radar has a different sense of humor and he has a hard time keeping his guests on topic but it's an enjoyable show and if you listen to some of his older episodes you will also get your Daphne and Tamara fix

The Traveling Avatar's Quick and Dirty Tips for a Better Second Life: http:/www.qdnow.com
Will is on a mission to help you find the best in SL and with his short, around 5 minutes each, podcast you can get your tips and be on your way. I think it will take you all of 2 hours to listen to every show he has put out to date.

And if you want to hear Daphne, and sometimes Tamara, use the creative part of their brains go over to http://podcasting.isfullofcrap.com and listen to the 100 Word Story Weekly Challenge. I often send in a submission and Tamara does on occasion if the topic moves her. Also it's hosted by her partner Crap Mariner, but he goes by another name on the show. If you have an extra minute and a half to listen to something creative and most of the time witty subscribe to 100 Word Stories, I listen in the morning and it starts my day off with a smile.

Hopefully Libsyn will have our feed working soon, we already have Episode 7 planned out, but if you have show ideas please e-mail me or Tamara at the links on the right.

Model/designer or designer/model? No matter how you describe her, Dakota Buck is hot with a capital "O," as in "OMG! Where did she get that outfit?" Perhaps she got it in Second Life's newest cutting-edge boutique? Perhaps it's her newest design? Savvy?

There's nothing we hate more than seeing the jewelry on every other avie out there. That's why we go to Ricx Curie's RICX Jewelry in Nepessing (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Nepessing/64/97/125). Visit RICX limited edition vault in back for something out of the ordinary. If you really want to be sure your jewels are one-of-a-kind, Ricx does custom work and engraving!

We've all had days where we couldn't decide between fun & frivolous and classic. When you're having one of those days, stop in at Mad About in Satang (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Satang/117/233/27) for Angelina Burali's designs. Rack up her Get a Cue set for billiards-inspired style. Or check out her diamond jewelry for a more traditional look. Whatever you do, don't miss her fire bead jewelry!

Has your hair been feeling neglected? Has it suffered from a lack of bling? Stop fretting and teleport your fashionable self to Simply Spoiled in Mechozilla (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Mechozilla/102/143/44) and check out Sampson Suntzu's hair jewelry. Don't forget to peruse the rest of his dazzling collection of gems!

Caroline's in the Lo Lo sim (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Lo%20Lo/128/196/23) is a great place to find a gift for that special avie. From Faberge-style eggs to cameos, Caroline Apollo has designed all sorts of special pieces at reasonable prices.

In Episode 5 of Going Broke with Daphne and Tamara, we explore the dark side of shopping in Second Life, and we don't mean when your purchase doesn't show up in your inventory!

We speak with Vivianne Draper about her work with Dark Eden designer Etain Peregrine and the new Dark Eden Plaza (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Indigo/161/184/504 ).

Teleport into Indigo and you'll find the latest in fetish wear by Etain as well as sexy clothes by dana Archer of Creative Kaos. Pony girls will also want to stop in Alyssa Jessop's shop, Prancing Harlot for the latest pony gear.

Craving a fur-trimmed cape any Cossack would envy? Visit Ookami Ringen for Zorena Deckard's Asian, Russian and Victorian designs with amazingly sophisticated primwork. Need some jewelry to dress up your look? Check out the unique designs of Ciphertazi Wandin at Red Queen.

If you'd rather be tied up in realistic Japanese Shibari ropes, go to LaFel Elvehjem's Oubliette and try out the demos. But if you're in need of horns or tentacles (hey, who isn't?), be sure to pop by Charissa Korvin's Devil Made Me Do It.

Grunge guys can't get enough of Cancer Manimal's boots and hip accessories. Finally, don't forget the Dark Eden Rogues' Gallery on the second floor for new designers!

We can't forget to thank Etain and Vivianne for the Lilith boots that Vivianne dropped on us when we visited with her a couple of weeks ago! They usually retail for about $200L in the Dark Eden store. Also, we have to point out that the model in the picture above is Etain Peregrine herself!

Now, get yourselves to Dark Eden Plaza for their big sale this weekend! If you don't, we'll use some of our new toys on you!

SL Name: Etain Peregrine [Charissa Korvin is modeling Etain's design Erebus, above]

Where from in RL: Texas currently live in California

RL line of work: SL is my RL baby!

Time in SL: um, Been on since late 2003, if that's what you are asking, also I am almost constantly on but not always on as Etainnnn....

What do you design/make? Boots, outfits to go with said boots, fetish gear of all sorts, occasionally furniture but not often. We have plans to expand into bold new areas soon so look for that ...

if pressed... silks, gorean equipment, weapons and items geared to support dark rp areas of SL

How long have you done this? Seriously for about a year, unseriously for about another year. I hope to do it for quite some time to come.

Why did you start?

There are people who tell you they started because they were making things for themselves and then people asked to buy them so they selflessly opened a store to give out the things the public was demanding out of of a noble sense of altruism.

I'm not one of those people. I started the store because Linden Labs cut my stipend, so i had the find a way to get more lindens. I wasn't willing to buy too many lindens so I had to start up a store. My first products were whatever was laying around in my inventory that I thought I could reasonably pawn off on some poor sucker. And the rest is history.

How has your product evolved?
Its been a trial and error process. I originally started doing furniture but I quickly figured out it just doesn't sell well. Or else my furniture was just really bad. or a combination of the two. On a whim I tried to do some boots. I had always been curiou sabout how the invisible prims worked so it was more to satisfy my curiosity. They sold better than the rest of my stuff put together so again I quickly figured out this was the way to go. I continue to experiment and try to go in new directions with each product release. Hopefully I have achieved that. I never want to get stale.

Where do you see your SL work going?
See above.

This is something I have struggled with for a long time. What is the endgame for SL businesses? I'm hesitant to keep all my eggs in one basket in just SL. I am interested in expanding to other worlds like SL, the only problem being nothing is out yet that competes with it. However if there was I would be there in a heartbeat. I'm interested in getting into more and more scripting and offering more functionality with my products, and expanding into new markets and demographics.

What skills have you mastered during your time in SL?
IM bar juggling, that's a handy skill. I think I'm pretty good at manipulating prims.

What skills would you like to master?
I really want to get better with textures. Mine are at best adequate, but don't come near the greats in SL texturing. I want to be among the best at every aspect of Dark Eden. I want to continue to improve until I deliver the top quality to my customers. They deserve my best.

Where can people go to see and buy your work?

Go to Indigo!

Can you give us a price range?
I try to keep it within the range of newbies. 200 to 300 for a full set and I usually offer pieces for sale separately for 25L to 150L or so depending on the piece.

Whos' work do you admire?
I have always admired Bare Rose, June is just a phenomenon. Lately her sculptie work and her textures have gone off the charts in quality.

I also admire the girls at Curious and Deviant Kitties, Gritty Kitty, Sinistyle. I love the sort of grunge kitty look that a few designers are mastering.. I wish I could do it myself but its just not quite my style. A couple of hot japanese designers I always keep an eye on is Kru and Tohru. both their work is great but a little pricey for me. Old school when I was starting out I had a huge huge huge thing for Nomine and I still check her place at least once a week. Her old stuff still maintains its quality even against brand new releases and shes very affordable so new people coming in try out Nomine, its fantabulous.

Do you consider anyone to be a major influence?
Well outside of SL probably the single greatest influence would be Michael Manning, an american fetish artist and author. You can check out his astounding work at www.thespidergarden.net. Anime is also a huge influence on me though I'm not sure its as obvious in my designs.

Who would you like us to feature?
I'd love to see more on the grungey kitty types, their work is so amazing and detailed and vibrant. Its also a look I think is fairly unique to SL, or maybe I'm just too sheltered fashionwise. Gritty Kitty, Sinistyle, anyone from the Block or Koreshan Point. Wow. they blow me away every time I go through there. Bastards.

Well, TheDiva Rockin has to pass on her crown. Hope it fits someone with Neko ears! DayDreamer Langway is a stylish Euro-Neko who always knows the hot new places to shop. We were sorely tempted to say that he's obviously in love w/his own avie, but hell, look at those pictures! Who wouldn't be? Give DayDreamer a pat on the back, but don't you dare mess up that carefully rumpled hair. SWOOOOOON!

An Interview with Zoe Llewelyn of Temenos:

What do you design/make? I am rather eccentric...I do it all, or rather try to. To varying degrees of success or suckage. I started out making cyberpunk armour and accessories just for fun, then turned to Neko skins, clothing, boots, and now I have like 5 or 6 brand names and more varying styles and work than I know what to do with. My latest venture is back to my personal roots in gothic wear clothing and skins. I own Boneflower Designs, Broken, Jungle Voodoo, Cyberpunk Apocalypse, The Heart of a Doll, and a few others. :3

How long have you done this? I have been doing this sort of work professionally for about 6 years, though I only started a business in Second Life after quiting my previous job working on a MMORPG about two years ago.

Why did you start? I have always been an artist, like my mother, and my grandfather. Growing up it was one of my main forms of expression, along with my writing. I am deaf, so my art was a major form of getting the inner me out to the world in pictures instead of with words. I worked corporate design and marketing for years before I took a chance and tried for a job with a game company. It was great to marry my love of art with my love of video games. later after finding SL it was a dream come true. I could work from home, be my own boss, and still what I love best in an environment less removed from my customers than traditional game design.

How has your product evolved? I am always growing and evolving I hope. In many ways, SL has challenged my skills more than any work I have done before. I have freedom here to do what I feel inspired to do, and that has let me explore myself in a way the corporate world didn't. I continue to learn new tricks and methods every day, and I hope that process never stops for me. SL has also challenged me to grow in areas not my strong place, such as scripting for my products. I think that is the area I have grown the most in.

Where do you see your SL work going? I have so many ideas and plans...I love doing new things, starting new styles and developing new brands as they come to me. I expect I will continue to go wherever the inspiration takes me. Right now I need to finish the design of three new sims I am working on so I can expand some of my stores and also start a coupl new ideas I have. From there, who knows where I may go. :3

What skills have you mastered during your time in SL? None. I am master of nothing. Just a student learning her way as best she can. I hope I will never master anything in life because that would mean i am done growing.

What skills would you like to master? I would however like to become better than I am and improve more in scripting and animations. Now that sculpted prims are here, i also plan to go back to working on my modeling skills as well.

Where can people go to see and buy your work? My main store is currently at Temenos, though it will be moving to a larger space soon on its new sister island.

Can you give us a price range? Wow...too many products to do anything accurate there. I have stuff from freebies to 1400L for skin sets and doll avatars, and every price in between. I try to be reasonable and modestly priced and do volume as my business model.

Whose work do you admire? That is a list too long to write down here. Some of my personal favorites whose work I not only admire and love but wear daily include Canimal Zephyr and Starley Thereian, Hevan Lament, Skanks'R'Us and Sweetedge, Feri Beckenbauer, Gritty Kitty by Noam, Wintermoon, Kin Kieko, Pixel Dolls, Torrid Midnight, Wraith Unsung, and so many more I feel so bad about not mentioning by name. Its such a horribly long list.

Do you consider anyone to be a major influence? Well, I feel everyone is always inspired and influenced in many ways by everything they see and everyone they meet. We are an accumulation of our exposures and experiences. But someone I personally admire greatly and who has constantly been an inspiration to me to push myself and gorw better has been Zabitan Assia of ::FORM::...he is a god among mortals to me and I think I own almost everything he makes.

Who would you like us to feature? Well, I would be biased on that I suppose. many of my closest friends here who have stood by me through some rough times are designers as well, and naturally I feel they deserve to be noticed. Sumire Mochi of Tweet has gotten some coverage, but I feel she is still undernoticed for the uniqueness and spontanious style she creates. She is a dear friend and has been my closest confidant and supporter as well. Also any of the people from the list above are more than worthy. I am just not sure how I managed to make my way onto someone's list for this interview...that remains a mystery to me.

On Tamara, left: hair -- Flirt by Naughty; Skin, ears and tail -- Ebony striped Neko, Jungle Voodoo by Zoe Llewelyn; Outfit -- Boneflower Leather Corset and Mini Set by Zoe Llewelyn; Boots: Boneflower Kitty Pirate Laced Biker Boots by Zoe Llewelyn.

On Daphne, right: hair -- Carrie by Celestial Studios; Skin -- Whispers of Night Spectral Female Blood Dusk Slayer by Zoe Llewelyn; Ears, tail and collar -- White Mouse Girl Avatar, Jungle Voodoo by Zoe Llewelyn; Corset -- Cross Corset, Broken by Zoe Llewelyn; Skirt -- Armide, Material Squirrel.

In Episode 4 of Going Broke with Daphne and Tamara, we interviewed Roslin Petion and CJ Carnot of Tete a Pied on the Nouveau sim ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Nouveau/216/204/21 ). Ros and CJ tell us all about their business partnership from their meeting at an SL coffee shop to the opening of their second store housing their complete ladies clothing and accessory lines!

We were also fortunate to have Zoe Llewelyn grant us a written interview! While we would have loved to have her on the show, that unfortunately wasn't possible. However, she submitted written answers to our questions, and we will publish them in a blog post on this site. We visited Temenos (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Temenos/155/108/106 ), the island she built to house her amazing creations.

Next, we visited Oh! What a Neat . . . Boutique above the Seonggye sim ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Seonggye/83/91/601 ). When designer Rosemary Galbraith passed me (Tamara) a pair of her adorable slouchy boots ($300L a pair), we had to go check out the shop. We were sure happy we did, because not only did we find Ms. Galbraith's fresh and fashionable designs, we also found Dakota Buck's new Savvy? line. Check out her hot retro designs (look for the outfit inspired by her friend Roslin Petion).

Finally, we took a trip to Nico Creations on Nico Island ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Nico%20Island/179/186/25 ) after Dominic Nico passed us each a pair of his hot new Jaded glasses/shades ($150L a pair). Dominic's sunglasses are very detailed and realistic, as are Joella Nico's prim chains!

After all that shopping, Daphne and I relaxed by discussing how to wear a system skirt so that your ass doesn't look fat. We also reminisced about some things that we (um, Daphne) said in SL that would get us (yeah, her) locked up in RL. To close out the show, we swooned over our first male Avatar of Style, DayDreamer Langway!

Thanks for listening!

Wow! It's sure a busy time for Paeoti Pomeray. In addition to opening a whole new sim ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Isle%20of%20Nymphetamine/167/154/26/ ) and designing some hot new clothes, Miss Paeoti has decided to hold a model search contest!

Why she'd ever decide to let her current curvaceous model-self retire, we'll never know. But it's a great opportunity for the rest of us! Go on down to her new main location on the Isle of Nymphetamine for details. The deadline for entering the contest is May 31, 2007 at 6 p.m. SLT! If you want more information, go to her store and click on the big sign just inside the door.

So, put on your hottest Nymphetamine's clothes and give it your all. There are some hot prizes to be won. And even if you don't win, it's a great reason to purchase some more hot Nymphetamine's fashions!

By the way, Paeoti dropped some goodies on us! She gave us each a Godiva Deco Dress (check out the picture here) which is one of the hottest designs we've seen in a while. We can't figure out why she sells it for just $500L in her store! She also gave us each a beautiful Dark Swan Boat (also selling for a mere $500L in her store).

Thanks, Pae, and good luck, Ladies!

It's my Rez Date and I suppose I should have something profound to say. Well I have tried, but I have nothing. Looking back at the old photos, I do see that I have changed. I never thought I looked bad, but I can tell I still had that newbie shine not that long ago. I hope you like seeing the 'Evolution of Daphne'. Just know that I have no plans on staying the way I am today, I might be blonde today and Drow tomorrow, I haven't decided.

Tamara and I are working on the next show, we hope to have it out over the weekend. We will be featuring a few over looked gems we have found while shopping. We always welcome your ideas and comments, the contact information is in the side bar.

In Episode 1 of "Going Broke with Daphne and Tamara," we talk with HD and Paeoti Pomeray, the couple behind the SLurgis sim (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Epsilon/42/88/34). Learn more about the family who inhabits this bikers' paradise and all the wild parties there.

HD, a biker in real life, tells us about his new line of motorcycles that are available in his SLurgis shop (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Epsilon/63/46/34). While you've always been able to change the color of HD's motorcycles, now you can have your HD bike custom painted before HD puts it together for you.

After you've placed your order for that custom bike, ride over to Nymphetamine's, one of the best boutiques in Second Life (http://slurl.com/secondlife/TheSirensGrotto/132/123/24). Paeoti's designs range from demure (well, not really) and elegant, to full out sex-kitten, but they all share the same attention to detail and curve consciousness that highlight what makes women's bodies special!

The SLurl to Nymphetamine's main store in the Siren's Grotto won't be accurate for long! Paeoti told us that she's building a new sim for her boutique and she hopes to open it shortly. We can't wait to shop at Pae's newer and bigger store and see even more of her hot designs.

Finally, we asked HD and Paeoti a few unusual questions. Find out about their favorite animation (available at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Apukohai/80/115/71) and learn why we can't provide SLurls to their favorite places in SL!

Start saving your Lindens for our next show. In Episode 2 of Going Broke, we'll introduce you to our first Avatar of Style and tell you about some of the things we've heard and said in SL that would get us locked up in RL, while covering the best of the best of shopping in SL.

Thanks for checking us out! Please email your comments and questions to us at daphne.abernathy@gmail.com and tamara.kirshner@gmail.com, or leave us a voicemail at 206-203-1318.

Tamara and I have been working hard. We are taking this time to relax. Tonight we record our first real episode. We have a very exciting interview planned and we hope it all goes well.

Hoping to update the website this weekend and have Episode 1 up by Sunday night, Monday at the latest.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Okay, the podcast you've all been waiting for (or we hope you've all been waiting for) is about to record Episode One. This Saturday night, Daphne and I will be talking to HD and Paeoti Pomeray and Astry Mirabeau! Tune in and listen to what the minds behind HD Custom Cycles, Nymphetamine's, Digital Knickers, and Lil Slurgis have to say!

Introductions

Why are we doing this?

Goals of Podcast:

  1. Highlight high quality design and craftsmanship in:
    • clothing, accessories, jewelry, tattoos
    • physical appearance (skin, shapes, hair)
    • furniture and home goods
    • builds
    • stuff you can/should only find in games (wings, weapons, jet packs)
    • special category goods (Neko, Furry, Gor, etc.)
    • vehicles
    • gadgets and toys.
  2. Highlight creativity in the above categories.
  3. Encourage new designers, builders and scripters to aim for the highest quality.
  4. Help SL residents spend their money wisely.
  5. Spot new inventions.
  6. Spot new trends.
  7. Spot new designers/builders/scripters.

We will interview when we can, critique products ourselves when we can't.

It's not our goal to "trash" bad products, just highlight the good ones.

We won't tell listeners not to shop at certain places; though there are so many shops in SL, just because we don't mention a shop doesn't mean we don't recommend it.

We will also discuss other issues such as when a friend copies your style, or when you have problems with a vendor.

We'll feature things that you can say in SL but not in RL!

We won't solicit free merchandise from anyone. We will accept it and explain that we will use it to critique the product. We won't accept anything that isn't available for sale to the general public (or won't be available very soon). We will disclose that we received free merchandise in the podcast, and incorporate more information (photos, prices) in the website.

Our first promo is up and we couldn't be more excited! Thanks to all of our friends who gave us feedback and support, especially Hedgie who reassured me that I don't have a fat ass.

Ok, I'm working on the podcast and Tamara is rolling around on silk sheets. There is a problem here.

We should have a promo recorded this week, maybe a little teaser as to our hopes and dreams and plans for the podcast. Really we might record something so I can play with the software and make sure I can get it out to the public.

Hoping to have Episode 0 out this weekend... or early next week.

Get your minds out of the gutter -- we didn't conceive the podcast on that table!

Tamara and I have been working hard to get everything ready to press record. We have software (Garageband and Audio Hijack Pro), We have microphones (Woot! I have a Blue Snowball), We have a site to host the podcast, We will soon have graphics and a prettier website, We have plenty of content ideas. What we need is TIME! If anyone out there has some spare time they can give us, we would appreciate it.

We are hoping for a launch of late April/early May due to my previously scheduled vacation (I need my Disney fix, damn it!). But we might have something here before then with any luck.

So back to work for me.

Hope you will 'hear' from us soon,

Daphne
